NEED

Significant wind and solar resources exist in north Queensland and there is interest from industry in developing wind, solar and other renewable generation and storage projects in north Queensland.

PROPOSAL

The proposal is investigating development of strategic transmission infrastructure in north and north-west Queensland to support a clean energy hub. The creation of this hub would facilitate the development of a range of projects that individually could not afford the significant cost of major transmission lines running from existing infrastructure on the coast, to the development areas several hundred kilometres west.

BENEFITS

The project is expected to deliver greater competition for energy prices, diversify the sources of electricity supply and transition Queensland to a cleaner energy sector. The project will also facilitate economic development in the north and north-west Queensland area.
